This show is touring North America, mostly playing one night engagements, and is bringing out sex-starved females over 30. Playing off the success of the 50 Shades of Grey novel, comes SPANK! The 50 Shades Parody. And why not? The book has made millions, and continues to sell. There is a board game, clothing, toys, a movie being shot in Vancouver right now, everyone is referencing it, and – most importantly – there has been a surge in rope sales across the country!
When the character Hugh – played by Patrick Whalen, representing the character Christian Grey from the novel – makes his entrance onto the stage, (doing a stripper-esque routine to Marilyn Manson’s cover of “Tainted Love”), the predominantly female audience goes wild. He is gorgeous, of course. He is the ultimate female fantasy: tall, good-looking, well built, and – a big bonus – he can act, sing, and pull off dance moves very well. He truly made the show.
Hilarious and without a glich, Hugh pulls off musical numbers such as “Pure Imagination” from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and “The Modern Major General” from The Pirates of Penzance, with the lyrics replaced with BDSM vocabulary. His suave, sexy manner makes it all seem so perfectly the thing to do. There is constant reference to nipple clamps and butt plugs, that gets to be a bit much, but the repetition does leave you with some lingering ideas.
Honestly, I was not expecting much, and I ended up laughing hard and even WAHOO’ing through some numbers. When it comes down to it, making fun of this book is a blast. SPANK! makes for a fun night out with the girls. It gets you energized with all the pumping pop music, talk of naughty sex, spanking, butt plugs, and the fantasy of being taken and used like a slave. Even though this is just a tease, and we were all laughing about it, you can’t ignore that women are devouring it.
